Ecatenate Builds Device Inactivity Detection for Brigade Electronics

A camera system that has quietly gone offline is worse than no camera at all — because the fleet still believes it’s covered. The gap only shows up at the worst possible moment: when footage of an incident is requested and there is none.

Ecatenate has developed a device inactivity detection system for Brigade Electronics, built into their Geotab MDR integration portal.

What it does

The system continuously monitors MDR device activity and applies a purpose-built algorithm to identify devices that have genuinely stopped reporting — then wakes them, automatically, where a wake-up is possible. Devices can be manually sent a wake-up on demand where required.

The difficulty isn’t spotting silence. It’s telling the difference between a device that is legitimately dormant, with the vehicle parked and ignition off, and one that has actually dropped out. Get that wrong and you either flood the portal with false alerts or miss the failures that matter. The algorithm draws on advanced features of the Geotab API to make that distinction reliably.

Why it matters

  • Evidence when it counts — recording coverage is verified continuously, not assumed
  • Fewer engineer callouts — devices that can be recovered remotely are recovered remotely
  • Faster fault resolution — genuine hardware failures are isolated and escalated quickly
  • Fleet-wide visibility — device health surfaces in the portal alongside everything else

About Brigade

Brigade Electronics is a global leader in commercial vehicle safety systems. Since 1976, Brigade has helped fleets and operators improve road safety through camera monitoring, collision warning and detection technology.

Geotab add-ins extend the Geotab telematics platform with additional features, integrations and custom workflows.
